Johnston Partnership Receives $2,000 Grant for its Nutrition Education Program
Grant provided by Farm Credit Services of America Working Here Fund hunger initiatives
Johnston, IA – (September 25, 2013) – The Johnston Partnership received a $2,000 Working Here Fund grant to support its Nutrition Education effort. The grant is provided through Farm Credit Services of America’s (FCSAmerica) Working Here Fund.
“We are excited to launch this expanded programming in 2014,” says Shawna Beron, Director of the Johnston Partnership, “we couldn’t have done it without the support of Farm Credit Services of America.”
The Johnston Partnership serves 100 families each month by providing healthy, nonperishable food to struggling families. It is enhancing its offerings by expanding classes to educate seniors and families about healthy, inexpensive meals while incorporating food pantry boxes and seasonal produce. The goal is to offer four classes through ISU extension at 4 community sites.
“Putting resources into helping address the food and hunger issues in Johnston and surrounding areas is worthwhile,” said Rich Danilson, vice president, FCSAmerica. “We support Johnston Partnership’s work in enabling food sourcing for populations in need.”
The Johnston Partnership also serves to enable struggling families to purchase fresh, healthy food items from local growers. The goal is also to increase the amount of fresh fruits and vegetables food pantry clients consume.
The Johnston Partnership is one of 44 organizations to receive a FCSAmerica Working Here Fund grant. FCSAmerica awarded $74,200 in grant funds during the latest grant cycle ending June 30, $32,200 of which will help fund community projects in Iowa.
The Working Here Fund provides up to $2,000 each for projects and organizations that make a positive, long-term impact in Iowa, Nebraska, South Dakota or Wyoming in the areas of agriculture education, young and beginning producers, or hunger and nutrition programs. Grants are determined quarterly based on specific selection criteria. To complete an application, visit www.fcsamerica.com/workingherefund.
